Invitatory: "There Is A Spirit That Delights To Do No Evil..." from A Quaker Reader by Ned Rorem (b. 1923)

Welcome & Introduction of Guest Preacher: Dean Thames

Call to Worship

Reading: 2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1

But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—“I believed, and so I spoke”—we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence. Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.  So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure,  because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.  For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Sermon: by Allen M. Wakabayashi

Hymn: We Love Your Realm, O God (St. Thomas)

We love your realm, O God, all places where you reign.  We recognize with hope and joy, the world as your domain.

We love your church, O God, for Christ has given life to form communities of love that seek to heal our strife.

Beyond your brokenness, we seek to know your ways of deep communion, solemn vows, and hymns of love and praise.

We know your truth will last.  We trust your reign is sure. Equip us for those daily tasks that help your world endure.

Pastoral Prayer

Lord’s Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Princeton: O Eternal God, the source of life and light for all peoples, we pray you would endow this University with your grace and wisdom: give inspiration and understanding to those who teach and to those who learn; grant vision to its trustees and administrators; to all who work here and to all who bear her name give your guiding Spirit of sacrificial courage and loving service.  Amen.

Benediction

Voluntary: Fanfare by Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823-1881)

Today’s Guest Preacher: Allen Wakabayashi serves as Chaplain at the Episcopal Church at Princeton, a church serving the campuses of Princeton University and Princeton Theological Seminary. After many years serving in campus ministry, Fr. Allen felt irrevocably drawn into the Anglican tradition and was later ordained as a priest. He was born and raised in Chicago and grew up in an active Japanese American church community. When he is not serving on campus, Fr. Allen enjoys getting out on local ponds and lakes to do a little bass fishing. He is married to his wife, Diane, who is also an ordained priest.

The University Chapel is a welcoming community of faith.  We gather to sing God's praises, to hear God's living Word, to seek justice, and to proclaim God's love for all people.

University Chapel Staff: The Rev. Alison L. Boden, Ph.D., Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel; The Rev. Dr. Theresa S. Thames, Associate Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel; Penna Rose, Director of Chapel Music; Eric Plutz, University Organist; Elizabeth Powers, Chapel Administrator; Edgar Gomez, Sexton; Lisa McGurr, Sexton
