Note from the organizer:God Forsaken: Divine Hope and Despair after the Islamic Revolution

No historical study of the 1979 Revolution and the Islamic Republic to which it gave birth can be complete without attention to how revolutionary actors and their successors imagined and experienced divine intervention in the here-and-now. As my presentation will show, confidence in God's aid in the first decade of the Islamic Republic gradually gave way to anxiety about divine punishment and, more terrifying, the possibility that the Almighty had entirely washed his hands of the Iranian revolutionary project.
