Michael Kimmage is a professor of history at the Catholic University of America. He is a non-resident senior associate at CSIS, and from 2014 to 2016 he served on the Secretary's Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State. He writes regularly for Foreign Affairs on topics related to American foreign policy and the former Soviet Union. He is the author of The Conservative Turn: Lionel Trilling, Whittaker Chambers and the Lessons of Anti-Communism (Harvard University Press, 2009) and of The Abandonment of the West: The History of an Idea in American Foreign Policy (Basic Books, 2020). His next book is forthcoming with Oxford University Press and is titled Collision: The War in Ukraine and the Origins of the New Global Instability. Professor Kimmage is on the advisory boards of the Wilson Center's Kennan Institute and of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik.
