Materials Imaging Workshop

Recent advancements in imaging technologies are reshaping the landscape of material research studies. The proposed “Materials Imaging Workshop” is designed to illuminate these frontiers for graduate students and post-docs, focusing on X-ray and electron imaging techniques. Materials Imaging Workshop” aims to inspire and equip graduate students and post-docs to explore and master imaging techniques as a valuable tool for their individual research endeavors. The primary goal of establishing this workshop is to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and cultivate a cohesive community in which researchers could enrich their projects using advanced imaging facilities. It will facilitate cross-field collaboration and drive innovation.

1. Introductory Tutorials on Imaging Techniques: The workshop will kick off with fundamental tutorials on various imaging techniques, such as X-ray radiography and tomography imaging, X-ray fluorescence imaging, and focused ion beam (FIB), laying a foundation for participants to understand their applications in material research.
2. Drafting Beamtime Proposals for Synchrotron Light Sources: A specialized session will guide attendees in crafting compelling beamtime proposals for synchrotron light sources, a crucial skill for accessing these cutting-edge facilities for high spatial and temporal resolution imaging in the national laboratory.
3. Guest Lecture from Oak Ridge National Laboratory: An experienced researcher from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (a national synchrotron light source) will deliver an insightful lecture on his latest research published on Nature Materials, providing an expert's view of imaging techniques in contemporary research.
4. Mini-Talks from Graduate Students: These sessions will include research mini-talks by graduate students from four different departments (MAE, CEE, COS, EEB,and CBE), illustrating the wide-ranging applications of imaging techniques in different research contexts.
5. Fostering Collaboration: The workshop will intentionally create spaces for attendees to interact, allowing for the exchange of ideas and the potential formation of new collaborations.
