LISD 4th Annual UN Veto Initiative Simulation
The simulation explores the workings and implications of the Veto Initiative (UNGA Resolution A/RES/76/262), which requires the UN General Assembly to convene whenever a veto is cast by a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council. In these sessions, the General Assembly debates the issue at hand, beginning with statements from the vetoing member(s), followed by contributions from other states. The initiative aims to bring greater accountability to Security Council decision making and strengthen the role of the General Assembly in matters of peace and security. Each year, the simulation applies the Initiative to a case study, and students receive feedback from attending diplomats and other practitioners.
