Tilghman engages in wide-ranging discussion on PBS

Princeton President Shirley M. Tilghman explored topics ranging from the University's groundbreaking financial aid program to science and public policy in an interview with PBS's "Charlie Rose" on Monday, March 16.

The 18-minute interview is available on the show's website. It aired on more than 200 PBS affiliates throughout the United States.

In response to a question from Rose about the effect of economic downturn on the University, Tilghman stated that it will have a "tremendous impact" but reiterated Princeton's commitment to its financial aid program and meeting the full financial need of students who qualify for aid. She noted that Princeton provides grants that are not repaid rather than loans, and that the University has increased its financial aid budget for this year and is planning for an even greater increase next year.

Rose and Tilghman also discussed how science can inform public policy, the need for federal funding for research, and the impact of humanities teaching and learning. In addition, they talked about the number of women in scientific fields, and the necessity for measures that encourage work/family balance.
