Princeton Bibliophiles and Collectors Meeting: An 18th-century Philadelphia Musical Story
Speakers: Elizabeth Rouget and John Burkhalter
Elizabeth Rouget and John Burkhalter will describe an opéra-comique performed frequently in English and in French in Philadelphia during the 18th-century when the city had a vibrant theatre, dance, and musical community. The focal point will be Charles Dibdin and Pierre-Alexandre Monsigny's opera Le déserteur. Hit tunes that circulated in multiple printed editions for entertainment at home will be highlighted.
