American Democracy in the World: A Conversation with Former Ambassador Chris Lu
Join the American Whig-Cliosophic Society for a special conversation with Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations for Management and Reform Chris Lu on the state of American democracy at home and abroad. A longtime public servant, Ambassador Lu has served at the highest levels of government, including as White House Cabinet Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Labor. Drawing on his experience in both domestic governance and international diplomacy, he will explore how America’s democratic ideals are tested and strengthened within the United States, and how they shape the nation’s role on the global stage.
This event will examine the challenges to America's democratic institutions, the responsibilities of leadership in a polarized era, and the future of U.S. engagement in promoting democracy worldwide. Students and community members will have the chance to engage with Ambassador Lu during an open Q&A following the discussion.
Chris Lu ’88 has held some of the most senior positions in the U.S. government, with experience spanning both foreign and domestic policy. Under President Biden, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations for Management and Reform. During the Obama Administration, Chris served as Deputy Secretary of Labor and White House Cabinet Secretary. He previously worked as Legislative Director and Acting Chief of Staff for then-Senator Obama, as well as Executive Director of the 2008 Obama-Biden presidential transition. One of the highest-ranking Asian Americans ever to serve in the federal government, Chris is currently the James R. Schlesinger Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center.
