Site: Exhibition by Carlos Agredano
Recent 2025-26 Hodder Fellow Carlos Agredano showcases new work in the exhibition, Site, in the Hurley Gallery at the Lewis Arts complex.
Site follows the history of the chemical industry in twentieth-century New Jersey, whose factories supplied pesticides, plastics, and munitions to American border enforcement and the United States military. Networks of industrial firms ran from Perth Amboy, Princeton, Los Alamos, Bien Hoa, to Basrah, and their inventions left behind a toxic legacy both at home and abroad.
In response to the negative environmental impact caused by the chemical industry, Congress passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) in 1980, creating the list of hazardous areas known as Superfund Sites. Though it is the fifth smallest state in the country, New Jersey holds more of these contaminated sites than any other state in the United States.
The exhibition places these sites beside the Minimalist and Land Art of the 1960s and 70s, whose practices mirrored the same pathways. Ideas were developed in the industrial landscapes of the East Coast, then carried to the Southwest, a region treated as open, empty, and available for experimentation and extraction. It was also where the chemical and military industries sent their inventions to be tested. Site reads these two histories together, treating the Superfund as a record of the militarization that Land Art's geography left out.
