Steve Mackey's “The Ancestors” featuring Aeolus Quartet
Steve Mackey’s recent work The Ancestors, which premiered at Wigmore Hall in London in 2025, will be presented on campus at Princeton, featuring the Aeolus Quartet. Bringing together the electric and acoustic realms, the piece pairs the iconic rock-and-roll electric guitar with the classical string quartet in a striking exploration of these two musical worlds. With haunting textures and atmospheric guitar effects, Mackey draws on quotations from musical forebears ranging from Beethoven to Zappa, using guitar processing to evoke the sensation of “echoing the past and freezing the present.”
