Classes back in session

Classes for the new academic year began at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Some students are starting their day with "Basic Principles of Quantum Mechanics" or "Beginning Polish." Others may be starting with the after-lunch music class, "Species Counterpoint," or "Classical Roots of Western Literature." Some are waiting until evening for the freshman seminars "Life in a Nuclear-Armed World" or "So, You Want to Change the World?" For some students, their first day of classes is thousands of miles away in an international setting. Wherever students may be for the start of the new school year, Princeton has tools and resources to support students along their academic journey.

Readings on civil society, diplomacy in the Middle East and ancient Rome have made their way from traditional paper pages to the digital screen for an estimated 50 students who have enrolled in classes selected for Princeton University's pilot of the Amazon KindleDX electronic reader.

Jin Yun Chow's studies in Latin, German and Old Irish, as well as literature classes in Chinese and French, have taken the Princeton senior to the top of her class. A comparative literature major, Chow is the valedictorian of the Class of 2017.

Malkiel to step down as dean of the college .

Nancy Weiss Malkiel, the longest-serving dean of the college and the second longest-serving dean in Princeton's history, will step down from that position at the end of this academic year.

John McPhee, a Ferris Professor of Journalism in Residence, reflects on his writing process, what he learns from students and the creative nonfiction course he has taught at Princeton for 40 years. His 32nd book, "Draft No. 4," was published Sept. 5.
