Charles F. Kalmbach, the first person to hold the position of senior vice president for administration at Princeton University, has announced his intention to leave in January.
"This has been a wonderful opportunity for me to serve a university I love, to help strengthen its staff and administration, and to initiate change in many of the ways in which the University operates," Kalmbach said. "As Princeton's chief administrative officer, I have been able to draw on more than 25 years of experience in the corporate world. I have decided that I would now like to go back to that world, but I leave taking great satisfaction in the changes I have been able to institute here and in the quality of senior colleagues that I have been able to bring to Princeton."
"Charles has made many significant contributions to Princeton these past 18 months, not only in leading and managing the University's commitment to change in its administrative affairs, but as a senior adviser to me," President Shirley M. Tilghman said. "Among his most lasting contributions are reorganizations in human resources and facilities to increase effectiveness and significantly improve customer service, and his appointments of Maureen Nash as vice president for human resources, Michael McKay as vice president for facilities, Steven Healy as director of public safety, and Paul Breitman as general manager of the new University services department. These were all stellar appointments, and they will ensure that Charles' legacy will last for many years to come."
A member of the Princeton undergraduate class of 1968 who received his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1972 in mechanical and aerospace engineering, Kalmbach also holds a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania. In his career in banking and management consulting, he focused on developing sustainable strategies for institutional change. Prior to joining the administration in June 2002 he worked for Accenture as global managing partner for its organization strategy and human performance practice. An Annual Giving agent for 30 years and active volunteer in his class, Kalmbach also has served on the advisory council for Princeton's School of Engineering and Applied Science. Last year he taught the school's course on "Leadership and Organization Dynamics," which he will teach again next spring.
