Sheldon Garon, the Nissan Professor in Japanese Studies and professor of history and East Asian studies, has received a 2017 Humboldt Research Award. The award is granted in recognition of a researcher's achievements to date and whose fundamental discoveries, new theories or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements. Award winners are invited to spend a period of up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at a research institution in Germany.

Sankaran Sundaresan, a Princeton University professor of chemical and biological engineering, has been chosen to receive a Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, in recognition of lifetime achievements in research. The award is presented to up to 100 non-German scientists each year who are nominated by their peers in Germany.

Simon Gikandi and Chika Okeke-Agulu recognized by British Academy for their contribution to the humanities .

Simon Gikandi, the Robert Schirmer Professor of English and chair of the Department of English, and Chika Okeke-Agulu, professor of art and archaeology and African American studies and director of the Program in African Studies, have been elected corresponding fellows of the British Academy.

Elman sparks regional-global approach to East Asian history .

Princeton University scholar Benjamin Elman has studied the history of East Asia for most of his intellectual life. Instead of getting easier, it has become more complicated — which for him is a good thing. Elman's ongoing interest is to re-examine our understanding of China and Japan by rethinking how the history of East Asia has been told, especially in the West, but also in China, Japan and Korea.

International learning, research invigorated through strategic partnerships .

One of the cornerstones of Princeton's focus on international research and learning has been its strategic partnerships with universities in Brazil, Germany and Japan. The partnerships with Humboldt University, the University of São Paulo and the University of Tokyo were established four years ago as part of Princeton's ongoing internationalization efforts.
