Lahiri receives PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story

Jhumpa Lahiri, professor of creative writing in the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University, has received the 2017 PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story.

The award was established by writer Bernard Malamud's family to honor excellence in the art of short fiction. Lahiri will accept the award at a ceremony and reading Dec. 8 at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.

Joyce Carol Oates, the Roger S. Berlind '52 Professor in the Humanities, Emeritus, and professor of creative writing, emeritus, received the award in 1996.

Readings celebrate 70 years of creative writing at Princeton .

Distinguished writers affiliated with Princeton's internationally renowned Program in Creative Writing will be featured in a reading series celebrating the 70th anniversary of creative writing at the University this year. Maxine Kumin and Joyce Carol Oates will lead off the readings by current and former faculty, alumni, fellows and students in the program at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, in the Stewart Film Theater at the Lewis Center for the Arts, 185 Nassau St.

Princeton University senior Claire Ashmead has been awarded a Witherspoon Scholarship to study writing at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. The scholarship honors the historic ties between Princeton and Edinburgh, highlighting the role of John Witherspoon at both institutions.

Katz, Oates awarded National Humanities Medal .

Princeton University professors Stanley Katz, a well-known scholar of American legal history and educational institutions, and Joyce Carol Oates, one of the country's most influential authors of fiction and essays, have been awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama.
