Faculty named to endowed professorships

Four faculty members have been named to endowed professorships, effective July 1.

F. Duncan Haldane, the Sherman Fairchild University Professor of Physics.
M. Zahid Hasan, the Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics.
Peter Jaffe, the William L. Knapp '47 Professor of Civil Engineering.
Tali Mendelberg, the John Work Garrett Professor in Politics.

At a March 26-27 symposium about the growth of the materials institute at Princeton, it's director, Craig Arnold, said Princeton has played a role “from innovations that are shaping the world such as OLED displays for phones or polymer nanomaterials for health to the creation of entirely new classes of quantum materials."

Princeton scientists discover chiral crystals exhibiting exotic quantum effects .

Princeton physicist Zahid Hasan led an international team of physicists who have discovered a form of chiral crystals — crystals with an asymmetry like biological “handedness” — that host slow light-like massless electrons. The movement of some groups of electrons in these crystals mimics the behavior of magnetic monopoles. These strange properties may be utilized for next-generation quantum, magnetic and optical technologies.

Scientists discover exotic quantum state at room temperature .

Researchers at Princeton found that a material known as a topological insulator, made from the elements bismuth and bromine, exhibit specialized quantum behaviors normally seen only under extreme experimental conditions of high pressures and temperatures near absolute zero. The finding opens up a new range of possibilities for the development of efficient quantum technologies, such as spin-based, high-energy-efficiency electronics.

Researchers track hurricane’s effects on river pollution and beneficial bacteria .

Princeton graduate students Arianna Sherman and Weitao Shuai, both members of Peter Jaffe’s research group in civil and environmental engineering, are investigating nutrient cycling and pollution along the Neuse River in the wake of Hurricane Florence, a September storm that drenched eastern North Carolina with more than 20 inches of rain and led to near-record flooding along the river. Much of the Neuse is lined with hog farms, and while some of the animals’ waste is treated and used as fertilizer, many excess nutrients from the farms’ open-air cesspools wash into the river.
